Clapboard Island is a private island in Maine north of Portland. We spent several days there at a large “cottage” were we filmed one of our PBS television shows. As magnificent as the house was, I chose to do this rustic subject for the painting demonstration. I liked the variation of colors that it afforded. It was also something different that I had done before which presented a challenge. The warm and cool colors really mixed themselves as I looked at the subject and on this piece probably due to the influence of not only the sky but the water which was right behind me. It’s very typical of Maine and lots of these markers are washed up on the beaches all the time.
