This is Lake Maria Sanchez looking towards the Flagler College and Lightner Museum in St. Augustine. Painted on location Sunday morning in the sweltering heat. I did have an umbrella over me and the painting but removed it for the photo below. It can get really hot down here. Fortunately there was a slight breeze now and again. The reflections on the water changed every minute as did the clouds but doing a painting like this, I just have to decide on one look and go with it. Occasionally I make a change to the water should some really interesting reflection come into view but not often as it would be hard to keep up with all that.
The shadows in the foreground help to anchor and put some weight into the painting. Without those shadows the painting would have been much weaker.
